Independent Facilitation & SDP

Do I need an Independent Facilitator to use SDP?

No. Facilitation is optional. Some families work with their regional center service coordinator alone. Many choose a facilitator because they want more hands-on help with planning, providers, and paperwork.

How is an Independent Facilitator paid?

The cost of an Independent Facilitator, if any, is paid from the participant's individual budget, through your Financial Management Service like your other services.

Will you replace my service coordinator?

No. Your service coordinator stays part of your team. We work alongside them and help you get the most out of that relationship.

Can Owl Advisors also provide the services in my plan?

Not if we are your facilitator. An Independent Facilitator cannot also provide services in the same person's plan. Our upcoming social/recreation, adaptive skills, and job coaching services will be offered only to families who use a different facilitator.

Advocacy & getting started

What does an education advocate actually do?

We help you understand your child's rights and options, review school documents, prepare for meetings, and sit beside you when decisions are made. Think of us as an experienced guide who knows the process, the paperwork, and the people — and works only for your family.

Are you lawyers?

No. Our advocates are special education professionals, not attorneys, and we do not give legal advice. All educational and IEP/504 decisions remain yours. If a situation calls for legal counsel, we will say so.

We're just getting started — is it too early to reach out?

It's never too early. Many families contact us before their first IEP or 504 meeting, or when they simply suspect their child needs more support. An early consultation often prevents months of frustration.

Do you attend IEP and 504 meetings with parents?

Yes. Depending on the level of support you want, we can coach you before the meeting, attend it with you, and review everything together afterward.

What areas do you serve?

We are based in Los Altos, California and work with families across the Bay Area. Document review, consultations, and coaching can also happen virtually.

How do we get started?

Book a free introductory call or send us a note through the contact page. We'll listen to your situation and suggest a sensible first step — often a document review or an initial consultation.
